Star Trek is coming back on television from September 24. And we can’t keep calm. We have gathered every bit of information about Star Trek: Discovery and collated together in this list.
1/5 It’s set 10 years prior to the Original Series
The sixth live-action Star Trek series is set a decade prior to the events of The Original Series. It takes place in the prime timeline which is basically the same timeline as the rest of the movies and TV shows, except for the recent J.J. Abrams directed movies.
The series will see some of the retro-futuristic gadgets. The flip communicators, badges and phasers and the likes. The uniforms are however identical to the blue jumpsuits of Star Trek: Enterprise. There will also be body armour that wasn’t really there when Captain Kirk’s team was breaching the final frontier.
As the title states, the action will center around the USS Discovery. But it won’t start there. We’ll be introduced to the main character when she is serving aboard the USS Shenzou.
2/5 The Federation is at war with the Klingons
The 15-episode series will see the Starfleet in conflict with the Klingons. At least the episode titles, synopses and the trailers indicate so. The season will also see the main characters even out their differences together. According to the showrunners, the war with the Klingons will be a commentary on the current political scenario of the United States, similar to how the Original Series took on the Cold War tensions.
3/5 Chief Characters
Lt. Commander Michael Burnham, played by Sonequa Martin-Green, is the protagonist. But unlike the previous captains, she isn’t a captain, yet. She is also raised on Vulcan after her birth parents, both humans were killed by Klingons. Her adoptive parents are also Spock’s parents, Sarek and Amanda Grayson. That means she is Spock’s sister. Her unique upbringing means she is the first human to attend the Vulcan Learning Center and the Vulcan Science Academy.
Sarek, Spock’s father, played by James Frain will also be a primary character in the show. Of course, a younger version of the one we met in the Original Series.
Captain Philippa Georgiou, played by Michelle Yeoh, is the top commander aboard USS Shenzou. Georgiou and Burnham were working together for some time and Georgiou gets convinced that is now time for Burnham to get her own command. But something happens to Georgiou and Burnham has to join the Discovery.
Captain Lorca, played by Jason Isaacs is the captain of Discovery but he isn’t the star of the show. And he is quite fucked up and has probably gone through some crazy shit.
Lt. Commander Saru is the science officer aboard the discovery. He also has so far the most chilling line the series: “My people were biologically determined for one purpose alone: to sense the coming of death. I sense it coming now.” Saru is a Kelpien, a race that’s new to the series and his ability to sense death evolved on his home planet where they were hunted as prey. On his hooved feet, he stands seven feet tall almost and he shares a brother/sister relationship with Burnham. Saru is also the Spock or Data in the series.
4/5 Discovery is a science vessel
Unlike the USS Enterprise, which was a flagship, the Discovery is a science vessel. It isn’t designed to be out in space for long. The design of the ship too is more like the original concept art of Enterprise.
5/5 Where can you watch it?
Star Trek: Discovery premiers on September 24th on CBS and CBS All Access. The show will run through November on CBS All Access and then take a hiatus and return back in January 2018. Each episode will be followed by Talking Trek, a live aftershow that will discuss the episode’s events. In India, the show will premier on Netflix on September 25.
